our origins and purpose

the idea for The Folkus Room Inc. arose out of the awareness and perception of a group of Canberra Folk Music aficionados  during May/June 2007 following changes in the Canberra folk music scene which left a big gap in the landscape when it came to the provision of quality performance opportunities.

It was soon also realised that there were several other genres of legitimate musical styles which, over the years, had always found difficulty in maintaining any sort of "home base" for the development and presentation of their craft.

Then it was noted that most places which were anything like suitable for hosting quality music performances wanted something happening in their venue on a more regular basis than any of these less commercially attractive forms of expression were able to commit to......

Along our way we were introduced to the Serbian community based in premises at Mawson ACT. Canberra has for many years been home to any number of very fine clubs maintained by minority ethnic groups. Having grown up in the heady clubland days of the 1970s and 80s many have since seen their ethnic population base either dwindle and die away or be swept up in a broader Australian cultural expression which has steered custom away, toward establishments and pastimes that could cope with the changes imposed by television, internet, drink/drive laws etc.

In June/July 2007 the good people at the Serbian Cultural Club were seeking to revitalise their considerable asset and bring it into the 21st Century...

Happenchance brought all three needs together and The Folkus Room was born!

our philosophy

the deal

This formula is based on an admission price of $15 per head.

The deal is strictly a door deal with the artist getting 85% of the door after my expenses (which are pretty minimal) up to a maximum of $2,000.

I will organise a local support act of appropriate quality and pay them as part of "my expenses". The fee for the support act will be 10% of the gross door or $300 whichever is less.

The only other expense I will have is to pay my sound engineer and I will know what that will be closer to the date of your gig.

The whole night will be recorded professionally with the artists able to dictate exactly how that will be dealt with.

We will sell CDs on your behalf at no cost to you.

Payment will be cash on the night with ABNs, declarations etc completed at that time.

We can also offer overnight accommodation for up to eight people (eight is squeezy) at no cost in a self contained, two bedroom unit (includes shower, toilet, kitchen, laundry) attached to the venue..... just imagine - no billets, no travel to or from motel/hotel.

Format for the night will be doors and bistro open from 6.00pm, floor spots available until 7.15pm. Support act for 45minutes from 7.30pm. Main act from 8.45pm in whatever configuration they want. We would be looking to have the show finish somewhere between 11.00pm and 11.15pm max.
