The Melbourne Jazz Ensemble was formed more than two years ago in time to play a major gig in Thailand.

The band contains some of Australia’s top jazz musicians who enjoy both a local and International reputation. They recreate the sounds of Dixieland Jazz from the twenties, thirties and forties, with all of its exuberance.

With two trumpets in the front line, the band takes their inspiration from Armstrong and Oliver, also from Jimmie Noon and Kid Ory, Jelly Roll Morton and the other heroes of the era. Their fire and passion makes them a delight to listen to or watch.

Formed by Dr. Simon Wallace, Thailand’s Honorary Consul General in Melbourne, each member of the band has a special quality to add to the overall, energetic sound of the band.

Together with classics from the jazz era, the band also includes many fine Australian jazz compositions to enhance their repertoire. The band’s sincerity, energy and enthusiasm guarantees them sell out audiences, whenever they play.

Leader Simon Wallace says: "We are perhaps better known in Thailand than Australia with several concerts up our sleeve in Thailand and one CD “Stirring The Possum” produced in Thailand. We are also well known for our rendition of His Majesty King Bhumibol of Thailand’s Compositions. There was a major release of all of His Compositions last year in Thailand to coincide with Him celebrating 60 years on the Throne. It was a 4 CD set called HM Blue and we were the only overseas band asked to contribute to the collection. We recorded four tracks for the CD. You can hear us on board all of Thai Airways International’s flights as part of the in-flight entertainment."
